The challenge

Laravel News had one of the most loyal developer audiences in the PHP world. The newsletter was being read, but it wasn't working as hard as it could. Content sections all looked the same. Sponsored placements were getting lost. The jobs section had no visual weight. For developers reading on a five-minute break, often in dark mode on a laptop, every second of friction costs you the read. The template was creating friction.

The solution

We redesigned the newsletter end to end. The new template opens with a strong version header: bold LN branding, release number, date. Then clearly separated sections for tutorials, featured consultants, sponsored blocks, jobs, and video content, each visually distinct and instantly scannable. Sponsored placements are designed to stand out without feeling out of place. The whole thing renders cleanly across the board.

The approach

01

Discovery

Reviewing against actual reading habits

Reviewed the existing template against how developers actually read newsletters: on laptops, in dark mode, during a five-minute break. Identified that the lack of visual hierarchy was costing scroll depth.

02

Architecture

Six distinct content sections

Defined a clear structure: version header, tutorials, featured consultants, sponsored blocks, jobs, video, closing note. Each section built to be scanned and skipped independently.

03

Creative direction

Hierarchy without ornament

Typographic hierarchy doing most of the work. Sponsored content designed to stand out visually but match the editorial register so it never reads as an ad.

04

Build

Dark mode detailing

Built in Maizzle with full dark mode support across every block. Sponsored placements tested specifically in dark mode because they have to look impeccable.

05

Verification

Cross-client certification

Render tested across Gmail web and mobile, Apple Mail, iOS Mail, and every major Outlook version. Dark mode validated on every client that supports it.

Design principles

Scan first, read second

Developers don't read top to bottom. They jump. The template has to reward that behaviour, not punish it.

Sponsored as premium inventory

Sponsored placements are designed to stand out without ever looking like banner ads. Premium visibility, editorial tone.

Dark mode-first

Most of the audience reads in dark mode. Design for that first, light mode second.

Design decisions

Bold version header

Gives each issue an identity and a cadence. Subscribers know which release they're reading before they read a word.

Jobs section upgraded to editorial block

The jobs section used to be an afterthought. Now it's a reason to scroll, and it generates real commercial inventory.

Sponsored placements visually distinct

Clear treatment that keeps trust with the reader. Nothing tries to trick the eye into thinking sponsored is editorial.

The result

Every issue is faster to read and faster to produce. Sponsors get better placement performance. The jobs and consultant sections became real commercial inventory rather than afterthoughts buried at the bottom.

"Remint exceeded our expectations with their outstanding email newsletter design, significantly boosting our subscriber engagement and revenue."
